About Junior Mathematics Olympiad (JMO):

The Junior Mathematics Olympiad is a prestigious competition organized by the well-known Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and the National Board of Higher Mathematics for students of class X to XII. The JMO is also a qualification test for the Regional Mathematics Olympiad (RMO) which selects as qualifies students to represent India at the international level in the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO).

 

Syllabus:

The syllabus of JMO includes pre-degree Mathematics. The different topics covered are:

• Integers
• Geometry
• Quadratic Equations
• Trigonometry
• Co-ordinate geometry
• System of linear equations
• Permutation and Combination
• Factorization of Polynomials
• Inequalities
• Elementary combinatorics
• Probability
• Number Theory
• Finite series
• Complex Numbers
• Elementary Graph Theory

It should be noted that the syllabus does not include calculus and statistics and hence the major areas of concern are number theory, geometry, algebra and combinatorics.

Marking Scheme:

The paper consists of 10 questions of 100 marks total with all questions having equal weight-age unless specified. The questions are to be solved and step-wise marking system is followed for mark assessment. A common question paper is given to all the students of the different class groups.

Eligibility Criteria:

The students who wish to appear for JMO need to clear one of the following criteria:

• Currently studying in class X with A2 or higher grade in maths in class IX
• Currently studying in class XI with Maths as an elective subject (irrespective of stream) with A2 or higher grade in Maths in class X
• Currently studying in class XII with Maths as an elective subject with 80% or above marks in Maths in class XI

 

Level of Exam:

The questions asked in the JMO are quite sophisticated with a high level of difficulty. This is also important as the JMO acts as a prelim exam for the  Regional Mathematics Olympiad (RMO). RMO in turn selects the students for Indian National Mathematics Olympiad (INMO). Students who qualify INMO are sent to the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC). IMOTC selects 6 best students to represent India in the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO).

 

Exam Dates:

The exam is held tentatively in the month of August-September and the official notification of the exam is out in the month of June/July.
